Could Giannis end up a Boston Celtic?

The 'Greek Freak' has been notably unhappy in Milwaukee and wants out, will Boston be his destination?

It was nothing short of a frustrating season for the Milwaukee Bucks. Rumors of their superstar wanting to be traded swirled all offseason and continued to plague them as the regular season tipped off. Head coach Doc Rivers was constantly under fire for the team's subpar performances and it was easy to see the poor body language. The roster isn't good, let's be real. It's a mish mash of talent that hit its ceiling a few seasons back (that Damian Lillard trade should have never happened).

The Celtics could step in.

While not the ideal roster building move, there IS a way for Boston to get their hands on the 10x All-Star. The obvious move is trading one of the Jays, that way you'd match salary easily and the Bucks would feel like they're getting quality back. In reality, Boston wouldn't do that, they'd find any way around it and try to be as creative as possible.

Strategy for a basketball game

Remember Anfernee Simons?

He plays a part in this! Simons was having a great season in Boston before being traded to the Chicago Bulls for a 2027 second rounder and Nikola Vucevic. The Simons trade opened up a 27.7 million dollar TPE that could be used in a trade for Giannis. The superstar will make 58.4 million next season so you'd still need a few pieces to match salary. Derrick White is the obvious name that comes to mind here because it's the only way you get to match salaries without putting one of your two young stars into the deal

It's an awful roster building idea.

We've seen it time and time again, rosters get gutted for superstars and the team suffers because of it. The Celtics would have the Jays and Giannis....and that's about it. It's not possible to build a roster that makes sense. Who runs your point, Pritchard? He's been great this year but he won't replace White's defensive prowess. You end up with a very expensive roster and young, cheap pieces that don't know how to perform in playoff atmospheres. It's something that ends up looking good on paper but hurting you in practice.

The Celtics need to maintain the balance they've worked to hard to build on this team. Center has been shored up with the emergence of Queta and the acquisition of Vucevic, but it remains to be seen how that unit performs in the playoffs. The bench could always use more help and veteran leadership, and ignoring the bench unit is not something any GM should want to do.

So yeah, the idea of Giannis in Celtic green is extremely fun and would make for fantastic TV. In practice, it would decimate the roster and tie up the books for years, with no clear way out. Also, the last thing Milwaukee probably wants to do is send him to a Eastern Conference rival. Brad Stevens will continue to add to this team in other ways and give them the best chance to compete night after night, without sacrificing core pieces.
